K1: Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg

mann2map

K1: This is THE best trail for a clear day. You get panoramic views in all directions. If you have the energy and time you can also take trail K2 up to an overlook. (See next section.)
From Lauterbrunnen, take the train up to Wengen. Sit on the side closest to the station for best views. At Wengen, there is a Coop store about 100 yds straight up the hill from the station. Locate the cable car cable coming down from the mountain and walk to that station to get a ticket up to Mannlichen.
At Mannlichen, you will almost certainly find friendly cows to pet, then take the 1.5 hr hike to Kleine Scheidegg. From there you can take a train down to Wengen, or hike a bit further to Wengeralp and buy a ticket there. (Walking all the back to Wengen isn’t advised, as the constant downhill grade on the trail will hurt your shins.)

K1b

Every time I’ve been to Mannlichen there are cows there. You can pet them if you use your common sense.

k1lilcloud1The trail ends up under that little cloud in the middle of the picture, at Kleine Scheidegg. Fairly level and smooth for walking.

k1lilcloudThat’s Grindelwald in the distant valley, and First is behind that cloud on the left.

K2: Mannlichen to scenic overlook

If you have a very clear day, then it is worth walking 15 min uphill to this overlook, before you take the 1.5 hr trail (K1) to Kleine Scheidegg.
